Psychodynamic & Relational Therapy in Union Square, Manhattan & Online Throughout New York

Some patterns won’t respond to a new technique or a cognitive reframe. They live way beneath the surface, shaped by relationships that formed you long before you had language for any of it. Psychodynamic and relational therapy works at that depth, following and loosening pattern beneath the pattern until things start to shift.

The Struggle

You notice there are some destructive patterns in your life. You consistently end up with the same kind of partner (even when this one seemed different). The same argument shows up in different situations. You may have read the books, done the workbooks, and learned the language of attachment styles and boundaries, and still find yourself in the same place, understanding the pattern intellectually while it keeps running the show.

Insight without change is one of the most frustrating places to be in therapy. It usually means the pattern was never fully unconscious to begin with, and the deeper roots, the ones formed in early relationships, have not yet been met directly.

The Approach

Psychodynamic and relational therapy is less structured than skills-based approaches, and that is intentional. Rather than working from a fixed agenda, we follow where your mind actually goes: the associations, the slips, the things you almost said but didn’t. Over time, this reveals how early relationships shaped your expectations and experience of closeness, conflict, and care, and how those expectations organize your life from behind the curtain now.

The relational piece matters as much as the psychodynamic piece. The relationship between us becomes one of the most useful places to examine your patterns directly, in real time, with someone who can respond honestly rather than repeat what everyone else in your life has done. This is depth work, not crisis management, and it tends to unfold over a longer period of time than symptom-focused therapy.

What Sessions Look Like

Sessions are open-ended rather than tightly agenda-driven. I will ask questions and offer observations, but you set the direction more than you would in a structured, skills-based model. We pay attention not just to what you say but to how you say it, what themes recur, and what happens between us as the work deepens. This is usually ongoing weekly work, since depth and consistency are what make the unconscious visible.

Who This Helps

This approach fits people who keep repeating a relational pattern despite understanding it, people whose sense of self-worth traces back to early attachment wounds, people who have done cognitive or skills-based therapy and want to go further, and anyone wrestling with identity questions that a short-term model cannot hold. It is also a good fit if you are not in crisis but sense that something foundational is worth examining closely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from just talking to a friend? A friend cares about you and also has a stake in the relationship. I don’t, which means I can reflect patterns back to you that people close to you may be too invested, or too impacted by, to name.

How long does this take? This is typically longer-term work, often a year or more, because it addresses root patterns rather than a specific symptom or crisis. Many clients find the pace itself is part of what makes change durable.

Is this the same as psychoanalysis? It draws from the same tradition but is less formal. We meet weekly rather than several times a week, and the work is collaborative rather than following a fixed method.

Can this be combined with EMDR or IFS? Yes. Many clients move between modalities as the work calls for it. Psychodynamic and relational work often provides the container, while EMDR or IFS address specific memories or parts that surface along the way.
