Discernment Counseling in Union Square, Manhattan & Online Throughout New York

Discernment counseling is not couples therapy, and that distinction matters. It’s a short, focused process for couples where one or both partners are unsure the relationship should continue and the other wants to save it. Rather than working on the relationship itself, we work on gaining clarity about which path to take next.

The Struggle

Every attempt at regular couples therapy stalls because you are not actually aligned on the goal, one of you is trying to repair while the other is quietly deciding whether repair is even what they want. You might be caught in the same argument on a loop, exhausted by the ambiguity, afraid of making the wrong call in either direction, staying or leaving.

This in-between place is its own kind of suffering. Friends and family often push you toward a decision before you’re ready, and traditional couples therapy can feel premature or even counterproductive when one partner has not yet decided they want to be there.

The Approach

Discernment counseling was developed specifically for mixed-agenda couples, those where the partners are not on the same page about whether to continue the relationship. The goal is not to fix the relationship in these sessions. It is to help both of you gain clarity and confidence about one of three paths: staying the course as it is, moving toward separation, or committing to a defined period of focused couples work, typically about six months, with full effort from both of you.

Sessions are structured to keep things low-conflict even when the relationship is in crisis. Most of each session is spent talking with each of you individually, with brief joint check-ins, so the leaning-out partner is not pressured to perform commitment they do not feel, and the leaning-in partner is not left in the dark. This model typically runs one to five sessions, not an open-ended commitment.

What Sessions Look Like

Each session usually opens with a short joint conversation, then moves into individual time with each partner to explore their own experience of the relationship honestly, without needing to manage the other person's reaction. We look at each partner's contribution to the relationship's current state, not to assign blame, but to build genuine understanding of what has happened and what each of you actually wants. Between sessions, I may ask you to reflect on specific questions on your own. The process typically concludes with a shared decision about which of the three paths to take.

Who This Helps

This work is designed for mixed-agenda couples: one partner leaning toward ending the relationship, the other hoping to preserve it. It is a strong fit if you feel stuck in limbo, if regular couples therapy has stalled or felt one-sided, or if you want clarity before making a decision you cannot take back. Discernment counseling is not appropriate where there is active domestic violence or safety concerns, and I screen for this before beginning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my partner won’t agree to come? Discernment counseling requires both partners to attend, even the one who is ambivalent. Often, the low-pressure structure, no promise to "work on it," just an honest look, makes a hesitant partner more willing than a request for full couples therapy would.

What if we don’t agree on a path by the end? Discernment counseling helps each of you get clear individually. It is possible to end the process with different conclusions, in which case we talk honestly about what comes next.

Is this the same as couples therapy? No. Couples therapy assumes both partners are already committed to improving the relationship. Discernment counseling is for couples who are not yet at that shared starting point.

What if we decide to separate? That is a legitimate outcome of this process, not a failure of it. If separation is the direction, I can support referrals for next steps, including individual therapy for either or both of you.
